Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine Dan passport mask presenting an expressive visage, hand-carved from finely grained wood exhibiting hues of burnt ochre, chocolate, caramel, earthenware, and espresso. The intriguing vizard presents with a pair of enormous circular eyes flanking a conical nose, thick lips that are slightly parted in the center, flush cheeks, and a bulging brow. The temples and peripheries of the mask bear several petite perforations meant for attaching a larger costume. Nice patina envelops the surfaces of the mask. Condition report : Small chips and losses to peripheries of mask as shown. Abrasions to face and some raised areas, with chips to lips and around eyes, and light encrustations. Nice patina throughout. A twisted fiber strap behind the mask enables the mask to be displayed.
