MAY From Middle Egypt, possibly Beni Hassan, el Bersha, or Lisht. The exterior of Middle Kingdom wood sarcophagi are often painted in imitation of domestic house exteriors. The false door preserved on the end panel of the present example allowed the deceased to magically leave and enter his permanent resting place. The type is discussed in Willems, Chests of Life.
