About the lot N° 7
Title : An Egyptian Painted Wood Sarcophagus Panel, Period : 1991.0
Provenance : Property of a Massachusetts Private Collector, Grogan & Company, Boston, 6 December 1991, lot 720.
Notes : EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES FROM THE COLLECTION OF ALAN M. MAY From Middle Egypt, possibly Beni Hassan, el Bersha, or Lisht. The exterior of Middle Kingdom wood sarcophagi are often painted in imitation of domestic house exteriors. The false door preserved on the end panel of the present example allowed the deceased to magically leave and enter his permanent resting place. The type is discussed in Willems, Chests of Life. For a similar but more elaborate example see the sarcophagus of Senbi, no. 94 in Saleh and Sourouzian, The Egyptian Museum Cairo.
