Description : Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab pendant covered in blue-green glaze. The topside features insectile characteristics such as a convex wing carapace, a slender head with a gently frilled clypeus, and sinuous legs tucked beneath the body, all above a suspension hole oriented lengthwise through the body. The underside is inscribed with a series of hieroglyphs that when translated read, (The Sun God) Re is lord of life(?) with recognizable glyphs including a royal uraeus cobra and an ankh. Size: 0.56 L x 0.4 W (1.4 cm x 1 cm) Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Condition report : Minor nicks and abrasions to topside and bottom, with darkening to glaze pigment on top of wing carapace, and very light softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to hieroglyphs on bottom.
