About the lot N° 126
Title : A Canaanite bronze figure of a deity
Medium : Bronze Age, circa 1500-1200 B.C.
Provenance : Provenance: Prof. Samuel Jean Pozzi (1846-1918) collection, France. Collection S. Pozzi (deuxieme partie), Art Antique; Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 25-27 June 1919, lot 329. Anonymous sale; Crait + Müller, Paris, 30 October 2019, lot 91. During the 2nd Millennium the imagery of Canaanite bronze gods was derived from foreign, and particularly Egyptian, deities. The conical crown is thought to be influenced by the White Crown of upper Egypt and the 'smiting god' type resembles images of Egyptian pharaohs triumphing over their enemies. These warrior-type figures are thought to represent the storm god, Baal. For a similar 'smiting god' figure see O Negbi, Canaanite Gods in Metal, Tel Aviv, 1976, p. 112, fig. 128 1318.
