The Mountebank
Literature : Marjorie Reynolds (1989) 'Everything you do is a Portrait of Yourself': Dorothy Kay, A Biography, Cape Town: Alec/Marjorie Reynolds, another impression from the edition illustrated on page 57. Marjorie Reynolds (ed) (1991) The Elvery Family: A Memory, Cape Town: The Carrefour Press, another impression from the edition illustrated on page 164.
Note : The Mountebank (of which Dorothy thought highly) is of the old Grand Theatre in Main Street [Port Elizabeth], with a crowd surrounding a ventriloquist and doll. The lights of the theatre stream across the foreground road, the interior lights of the balcony (where pre-ordered sit-down teas were ready in advance to be served by waitresses during the interval between films) create a pattern of window-panes and balustrades. We children watched and listened to the ventriloquist while Dorothy made her sketches.
