Note : FROM AN EGYPTIAN PRIVATE COLLECTIONMahmoud Said's early works show the influence of impressionism, still the dominant style in Europe at the time. However, even at this early stage one can see aspects of his style which were to be developed in his subsequent painting. Composition is carefully controlled and the slightly unnatural light heightens the sense of drama, lending the painting a strong sense of narrative. This is one of the earliest known paintings by Mahmoud Said. In the monogram by Esmat Dawastashy, Mahmoud Said (in Arabic), Cairo, 1997, it is referred to as fifth in the list of known works, but not illustrated.
