Note : Hotel Self Portrait is an excellent example of Norman Catherine’s masterful use of airbrushing. The artist was first introduced to the technique while working at his first job in Johannesburg at an advertising firm in 1971, where airbrushing was used on photographs of cars and fashion. Soon after, he encountered the technique once again, while working at a design studio where the airbrush was used for illustration – this inspired the artist to incorporate it into his own practice. Although Catherine’s artistic production now includes a diverse range of media and techniques such as bronze sculptures, printmaking, and weaving; the artist was popularly known for his pristine airbrush paintings in the 1970s.
