Norman Catherine; South African 1949-; Requiem
Provenienza :
Exhibited : Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg, Water, the [Delicate] Thread of Life, 27 July to 1 October 2011.
Literature : Goodman Gallery (2000) Norman Catherine, Johannesburg: Goodman Gallery, illustrated in colour on page 112.
Note : In the epic Requiem (1994) … a monumental Neptune-like figure emerges from the water with fish in hand. This is, of course, loaded with Christian symbolism. It refers to the New Testament parable of the fish and the loaves. It is during this phase that Catherine also returns to the etchings of the walls and empty edifices of his earlier years. - Hazel Friedman
