Note : Known as the 'choreographer of letters', Nja Mahdaoui works on vellum, paper, fabric, polystyrene, metal, filling them with stylized Arabic calligraphy. Although his words are rarely decipherable, he uses letterforms as motifs to create rhythmic and melodic compositions.Using traditional techniques, but with materials that are sometimes classic but often contemporary, his style seems almost Far Eastern, his works exist between tradition and modernity, between calligraphy and abstract art.Mahdaoui took part in the show SpringLines, Contemporary Calligraphy from East and West at the Edward Johnston Foundation in Sussex in 2001 and was invited to show his work at the Ohsaki Art Museum in Tokyo.
