Provenienza :
Exhibited : Die Kunskamer, Hugo Naudé Exhibition, 5 June 1991, cat.no.24.
Literature :
Note : Hugo Naudé travelled to England and Europe in 1913 with his nephew, Philip du Toit, and N C Krone, accompanying them on a Grand Tour. This painting was likely completed during their time in Italy, where Naudé explored the dramatic Amalfi Coast with its jagged cliffs and offshore sea stacks. While firmly grounded in his own visual language, the present lot reveals the influence of the Impressionist movement " particularly Monet " in both its luminous palette and lively technique. Monet's garden scenes at Giverny, with their cascading flowering foliage and layered compositions, appear to have been celebrated by artists and travellers alike, the fabled beauty of Lake Como is brought to life here through Naudé's flickering brushwork, fresh bursts of colour, and compositional serenity.
