Descrizione : Rare Wrought Iron Slave Ankle Shackle With Metal Bells, Ca. 1750-1840 A hand-crafted, wrought iron ankle shackle, measuring 5.625 x 5, weighing 0.25lbs, dated Ca. 1750-1840. This artifact was likely used around the ankle of a slave to prevent him or her from running away - any movement would sound an alarm and notify guards. The anklet consists of small metals balls encased in the metal folds of the shackle, in a similar yet far more sinister way to how jingle bells are created today. This particular example is especially unique in that it is a fully enclosed bracelet. There is expected minor surface pitting and oxidation from age, having a natural, rich patina. Provenance African Art dealer Ibraham Berthe This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
