Descrizione : Mask kpan add to watchlistBaule, Elfenbeinküste wood, polychrome paint, a board carved with an oval face showing a coiffure consisting of four lobes and a knob-shaped protruding in the middle, a domed forehead, almond-shaped eyes with painted pupils are flanking a slender nose, a small open-worked mouth underneath, raised scarification marks in the area of the forehead, the temples, the cheeks and the mouth, the facial plane framed by small ears, collection number G 87 inside, pierced around the rim, min. dam., cracks, small missing parts, insect caused damage, on base, kpan masks are part of the goli masquerade, a day-long performance that involves the entire village population and which displays four pairs of masks. This popular event only takes place during an important event such as the death of a notable or a major celebration. The kpans are the last to take part in the ballet, their appearance remaining exceptional, the ornamentation and colours are equally attributed to the two sexes, not ing making it possible to distinguish them clearly and their role remaining ambivalent.
