From the earliest times, the ancient Egyptians were very aware of their foreign neighbors. Standardized images representing the ancient Lybians, Nubians, Asiatics, and other foreigners are preserved in painting, sculpture, and the minor arts, which reveal how the Egyptians' perception of these peoples altered over time. The period of this relief coincides with an historical event that could have inspired the choice of the subject for this relief model. Under the threat of a Libyan attack in 655 B.C., Psamtik I sent troops to meet the danger ( Lexikon der Ägyptologie, vol. III, 1980, col. 1023 and vol. IV, 1982, col. 1166). Perhaps it was carved in the wake of the event, in anticipation of more elaborate depictions of this subject on royal monuments.Sotheby's, banditore, New York, US
