Descrizione : This particular coin is quite unusual. Unlike the vast majority of Julian's coins, this large follis measures 27 mm. More interesting still is the reverse, which depicts the Egyptian Apis Bull. Ancient Egyptians, especially those in Memphis, identified the Apis Bull with the son of goddess Hathor. By the time this coin was minted in the 3rd century A.D., Roman Egypt wa largely pagan. And yet old traditions die hard - this coin suggests that the Apis Bull was still revered even in the third century. Julian II (sometimes called Julian the Apostate) was the father of emperor Jovian. He was the last pagan emperor, all followers embracing Christianity. He ruled from 355 to 363 A.D., when he was killed by a javelin in a war against the Persians.
