Descrizione : Fired clay. Nok culture, Katsina, Nigeria, around 200 BC (confirmed by TL-test) An unusual head sculpture pertaining to the style of a modern artist, primarily because of the elongated cylindrical neck and the comparatively small triangular face. The eyes are large and almost shut, the mouth protruding far forwards. The high eyebrow arches are ribbed and the tall forehead and scalp are domed, but narrow with beaded hair running along centrally to the neck and two rather unconstrained renditions of braids on the sides. A ribbon around the bottom of the neck, bulges marking the beginning of the breast. Typical surface structure of Nok artefacts arising from the somewhat higher quartz content. Mounted on a black base. HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE 28,8 CM Provenance Galerie Lefevre, Brussels TL-test certificate no. 980326, dated July 1998, by the Kotalla laboratory in Germany included. The African Nok culture existed from around 1500 BC to 200 AD. The first finds were unearthed in 1928 accidentally, but their importance was first recognized in 1943 by a civil administrator of the British colony. They are among the oldest discoveries from Africa, only precursed by artefacts from Ancient Egypt. As is the case for most ancient cultures, the name Nok was coined after the site where the first discoveries were made, in central Nigeria southwest of the Jos plateau. The area known to have yielded discoveries at the time when interest in them spurred reached out to the cities of Sokoto and Katsina. Although the connection between is still unclear, the stylistic similarities of the sculptures indicate that the Nok culture disseminated to these settlements. The unique, stylized human depictions captured the attention of many modern European artists.
