Descrizione : David Roberts, R.A. 1796-1864 ruins of erment (ancient hermontis), upper egypt signed l.r.: David Roberts R.A. and inscribed l.l.: Hermont Novr 26th 1838/Ancient Hermonthis watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour 24.5 by 33.5 cm., 9 3/4 by 13 1/4 in. Erment or Hermontis, as it was known in ancient times, was the former capital of the IV district of Upper Egypt. It was built on the western bank of the Nile and dominated by a great temple, dedicated to the war god Montou. It was here that the Thebian priests came at New Year to celebrate the cult of Amon-Re and the coming of the flood which was so necessary at sowing time. Other Europeans, like James Bruce in the eighteenth century and Jean Louis Burckhardt in 1813, had explored the interior of Egypt before Roberts, but he was the first British professional artist to make the journey up the Nile. Throughout the expedition he painstakingly recorded the monumental ruins of ancient Egypt and on his return to England the resulting body of work was made into lithographs by Louis Haghe. Roberts left England for Alexandria in August 1838. On his arrival he hired a boat to take him up the Nile. During the trip he made notes and sketches of the ancient sites along the banks and on the more leisurely return to Cairo he drew them in greater detail. The present watercolour was drawn during the morning of the 26th November when Roberts visited Erment. Astonished at the scale of the city and its faded grandeur he was inspired to make a number of drawings whilst he was there. At 11 o'clock Roberts set out from Erment for Thebes, catching site of the ruins at Luxor two hours later. In the afternoon he arrived at Karnac where he spent four days Another watercolour depicting the interior of the city was later, like the present work, made into a lithograph by Louis Haghe and published in the 1840's Provenance: With Colnaghi, 1962 Engraved: as a lithograph by Louis Haghe for Roberts' Egypt and Nubia, 1848 Vol II, pl.209
