It was made using the twined technique, where two strands were intertwined between each warp. The author of the Satire of the Trades, a Middle Kingdom-era didactic text, does not paint a pleasant picture of the lives of Egyptian weavers: The weaver is in his workshop... with knees against his chest, he cannot breathe air. If he skips a day of weaving, he is beaten fifty strokes, he gives food to the doorkeeper, to let him see the light of day.
