Descrizione : of rectangular form carved with seven lines of Greekdedicatory inscription, the first line in largercharacters with an ivy leaf at the end. The inscription translates: "Nikolaos, also calledPriskos, priest of the hero Memnon for life, andZenodoros, priest of Tyche for life, both sons ofAntiochos son of Nikolaos Memnonides the Stoicphilosopher, Abaskantos son of Eudemos (set up) thosewhom he raised [...]." The text suggests that twobrothers are honored, maybe with statues, by theirfoster father.This inscription appears to be the only knownattestation of a public cult of the Homeric hero Memnon,a mythical Aethiopian king, son of Eos and Tithonyus, whofought on the side of the Trojans during the war. Tombsof Memnon are attested in several places in the ancientworld, on the river Aisepos (so presumably in theterritory of Cyzikos), Paltos in Phoenicia (in the Peraeaof Arados), Ptolemais-Akko (modern Acre), Susa in Persis,and at the famous Colossus of Memnon at Thebes in Egypt.On the cult of Tyche, the goddess personifying the cityand protecting it at the same time, see Lesley Adkins andRoy A.
