Mohammed Melehi (Moroccan, B. 1936)
Notes : The wave is a leitmotif of Melehis work, expressing his interest in scientific theory and the classical elements of earth, water, air and fire. Further influences are Moroccan crafts, particularly rug patterns, North African pictographs, and the Islamic arabesque. Taking on a variety of forms and executed in a broad range of colour combinations, the artists wave expresses both the rhythm and spirit of life. This is the only work of his from the 1970s to have appeared at auction in recent years. His work is held in international museum collections such as MoMA in New York, The Institute du Monde Arabe in Paris and The Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.
