Notes : "Petrie is a one-run lithograph hand-printed directly from the stone, and is titled Petrie because of the loose association with petrification - organic matter exposed to minerals over a long period turns into a stony substance - and for the archaeologist, Sir Flinders Petrie, preserver of artefacts, notably the ancient Egyptian mummies and their portraits. The slightly startled expression of this skull prompted this title, and the attendant references." -Joni Brenner Joni Brenner is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. She has a BA(FA) and an MA(FA) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has been practicing professionally as an artist since 1996 and has held solo exhibitions in Johannesburg and London. Her practice and much of her teaching are centered on portraiture and its attendant issues of morality, transience, and the fragmentary nature of knowing. Brenner is the curriculum developer and tutorial coordinator at the Wits School of Arts, Interdisciplinary Arts and Culture Studies department. She has taught at the University of the Witwatersrand since 1999. She is an honorary member of the Marigold beadwork co-operative in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and a contributing designer to the silversmith workshop, One-Eleven Plumtree, also in Bulawayo.
