Notes : FROM AN EGYPTIAN PRIVATE COLLECTIONDabkka (meaning "stomping of the feet") is a traditional folk dance of the Levant, which is the national dance of Lebanon, Jordan , Syria and Palestine. Groups of either men or women, or mixed, dance at one time. Performed at weddings and other celebrations, it is a line-dance and there are several varieties with different steps and different rhythms. The dabkka leader (called the "head" or "waver" is supposed to be like a tree, with arms in the air, a proud and upright trunk, and feet that stomp the ground in rhythm, emphasizing connection to the land. He or she is allowed to improvise on the type of dabkka being danced, while the rest of the dancers keep the rhythm. dabkka was popularized and modernized during the twentieth century by the Lebanese composers the Rahbanni and singers like Fairuz.
