Notes : PROVENANCE:Purchased from the Henry Lidchi Gallery, Cape Town, 1963Thence by direct descent to the current ownerEXHIBITED:Cape Town, Henry Lidchi Gallery, March 1963, no. 18Pygmalion takes its inspiration from the myth of Pygmalion, the Greek sculptor who falls in love with his subject. The similarities to the sitter in the present lot and Rose Innes's wife Joy can be easily seen. The present lot was illustrated (in black and white) in the review of the exhibition at the Henry Lidchi Gallery in the 19th March 1963 edition of Die Burger. This fourth one-man exhibition is regarded as his most important and was widely and enthusiastically reviewed. Carl Buchner, writing in the Cape Times, called the exhibition his most significant to date.BIBLIOGRAPHY:Bekker, M., The art of Alexander Rose-Innes, (Johannesburg, 1991)
