Description : Senufo Ladle
Ivory Coast
The Senufo are mainly farmers and have a population of around one and a half million divided over three countries: Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso, to a lesser extent.
Senufo masks are used in the rites of the poro society, a male organization that educates young men in the traditions and responsibilities necessary for their coming of age.
This ladle used for palm wine has a beautifully carved female figure as a handle. The figure sits on a traditional stool. The intricately carved eyes look downwards on a very elongated and protruding face, the arms are on the hips. Beautiful patina with obvious signs of use.
