Raven, „Papyrus-sheats and Ptah-Sokar-Osiris Statues, in OMRO 59-60 (1978-79), 251 - 296 This funerary statue originates from Late Period of ancient Egypt, the 26 υ th to the 30 υ th Dynasty (664-342 BCE). Such an object was placed next to a tomb to keep away evil spirits from the deceased. In this case it is a complete Ptah-Seker-Osiris statue, whose single parts are surviving in their integrity. It is a deity combining the three gods Ptah, Seker and Osiris. The main task of the god was to hold the text of the dead in the base. The statue depicts a mummy with a human head standing on an elongated plinth, wearing a crown with horns. The statue once depicted two Horus sons painted on white foundation and yellow surrounding. The face is cleanly carved with especially prominent eyes. A little cap is located opposite the statue on the base. The godly statue, or the base on which is was placed, subsequently hided a piece of funerary papyrus. This was most often an example of the book of the dead, but other afterlife books have also been found, for example the Amduat. Sometimes other papyri with irrelevant content for the deceased were detected, which were sold as copies of the book to the dead. In reality, they were old, discarded administrative texts or the like. Only a very small part of the population of ancient Egypt was literate, so this scam remained unexposed. The statue of Ptah-Seker-Osiris is in well preserved condition with normal age-related traces like small repulsions. The statue depicts some little remains of painting. The back plinth was once inscribed with a column of hieroglyphics (reading from right-to-left), which has become complete illegible. A cut in the wood draws itself through the central left. The repulsions seem to be recently straightenedin a clean manner. The extension on the head of the statue used to be glued on. The dimensions of the statue are 37.7 x 8.4 x 5.8 cm, and theplinth measures 36 x 10.7 x 8.3 cm(height x width x depth). The extension on the head is 14.4 x 6.5 x 0.5 cm large and the little object opposite the statue sizes 12.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm.
