Description : West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan people, ca. early 20th century CE. A near-miniature example of a Dan passport mask that is hand-carved from coffee-hued wood. The ovoid vizard features a tall nose topped with a pair of coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pursed lips, and an overhanging forehead with incised scarification grooves down the center. Such maskettes were created to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection.
