Description : West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wood kagle mask with human or goat canine teeth set in the mouth, goat hair tassels, and a cotton storage bag. The mask is a petite near miniature size, the highly stylized and angular visage composed of a jutting forehead over recessed sockets with cutout eyes, sharp cheeks, and an elongated wedge-shaped nose over open lips. On the verso is an attached tassel of goat hair and the cotton bag is decorated with a cowrie shell, bundle of sticks with additional goat teeth, and tassel of goat hair. The bag is tied to the mask via a cord through an iron nail loop on the top of the forehead.
