The work was published in France by Levrault in 1816. The engravins were completed by Jean-Gabriel Pretre. The work depicts a vast array of images from the animal and plant kingdom. Turpin was noted as one of the greatest botanical and natural history engravers of his time. He began his study of natural history while he was stationed in Haiti in 1794 as a member of the French Army. It was during this time he met the botanist Pierre Antoine Poiteau. The pair began to create botanical field drawings, and this inspired Turpin's passion for natural history. He was a largely self taught artist. 1 Engraving from: This very old, originally hand-colored woodcut engraving is from Adam Lonicer [Lonitzer]'s Kreuterbuch Kunstliche Conterfeytunge der Baume, Stauden, Hecken, Kreuter, Getreyde, Gewutze. The work was published in Frankfurst in 1616 by Sigismund Latomus for Vincent Steinmeyer. The popular herbal was first published in 1557 and featured numerous woodcuts of distilling, plants, animals, fish, precious stones, and scenes of rural life. 1 Engraving from: This impressive folio engraving is from Naturgeschichte der Krabben und Krebse by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst. The work was published between 1782 and 1804. Herbst was a German naturalist, entomologist, theologian, and chaplain. Herbst's work was the first comprehensive work on crustaceans and introduced many unknown species. 2 Original Illustrations from: This original illustration is from Payan du Moulin's manuscript entitled Recueil d'Histoire Naturelle, Coquiller Vivanty et folliles minerologie.. It was completed in 1875 in Aix. Each illustration is typically of sea life or ammonite native to France. The illustrations were after the collection of Payan du Moulin or found at Labedoule. Some are after illustrations by Picot, Laperouse, Creyn, Knorr, Walch, and Juan Fernandes. Many of the notes on the specimens are recorded to the page and were done by Professor Charles Lory of Grenoble University, a French Geologist. Payan du Moulin was a councillor at the court at Aix and an Officer in Charge of Public Instruction. He was strongly influenced by Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species and this is reflected in his natural history work.
