Description : An intricately detailed marble head of an Etruscan/Greek Kore figure, c. 6th - 5th Century BC, featuring the enigmatic smile so characteristic of the Kore and wearing a diadem, the hair in tight waves around the face running behind the ears with ringlets to each side of the neck. H: 8 (20.3 cm). Well-preserved and a sea find, with a few areas with calcified encrustation and mineral deposits within the recesses. While the face and hair are virtually intact the piece does suffer from an acid wash that, while leaving encrustations in place, turned the white marble to a yellowish hue. Proper restoration would multiply the value of this piece. While originating in Greece the form of the Kore was adopted by the Etruscans and other ancient peoples. Purchased in Egypt in the 1930's from the well-respected dealer Deouky H. Ibrahim, at hone Mena House Hotel. (original Receipt included) and held in the same family ever since. Ex Collection of Dr. Laurence and Dorothy Grossman, Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Grossman was an internal medicine and cardiovascular disease specialist, and the first physician in Nashville to fully racially integrate his medical practice and staff.
