Accompanied by a receipt from Sotheby's, New York.Published:Sotheby's, New York, Fine Classical, Egyptian, and Western Asiatic Antiquities, 13th December 1979, lot 291.Literature:Scenes from the twelve labours of Hercules are often depicted on vases from Antiquity. His battle with the Lernaean Hydra and his capture of the Erymanthian Boar are well known. Although his fight with a centaur is not one of the twelve labours, Hercules did have various encounters with famous centaurs, including Pholus, Chiron and Nessus, any of which might be depicted on this vase.Bonhams 3, Salle de vente
