Description : East Africa, Ethiopia, ca. early 20th century CE. A sizable processional cross made from silvered brass that is mounted atop a conical shaft adorned in triangular patterns. The main body itself is an incredible openwork crucifix with intricate knotwork decorations, 'woven' patterns, and floral motifs that create a dazzling presentation. The elaborate design and ornate aesthetic reflect the richness in the traditions of Ethiopian Christianity. Size: 16.375 W x 22.7 H (41.6 cm x 57.7 cm) Ethiopian Christianity is one of the most distinctive traditions of the religion, earlier than much of the rest of Africa thanks to missions from the 1st century until the 4th century, when St. Frumentius of Tyre converted King Ezana.
