Consulter la cote et le prix de Egyptian Large Pataikos Amulet, 1994

Description : Late Period, 664-332 BC. A large green-glazed composition amulet of the naked dwarf god Pataikos with large head and smaller body, grasping snakes, and a scarab clings to his bald head, an attachment loop to reverse, lower part missing. Property of an Essex gentleman, acquired from a collection formed in the 1920s. Cf. Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.39. The god Pataikos is named after a passage in Herodotus, which describes a Phoenician dwarf-form protective image, known as the son of Ptah, the craftsman's god. Dwarves are always present among the workers in precious metal workshops in Old Kingdom scenes of daily life. The finest images of Pataikos date to the Third Intermediate period and later Pataikos figures often hold snakes in order to make them harmless to people, especially vulnerable children. Pataikos was very popular from the New Kingdom onwards, providing protection from creatures like snakes and crocodiles. 23 grams, 67mm (2 3/4).
