Description : The mask is from theÊDan tribeÊwhich can be found in Ivory Coast, Liberia and Guinea. Second half 20th. C. The Dan people favor the use ofÊcowrie shellsÊon their masks. Like all Dan masks, this mask was considered sacred and not intended to represent spirits but was rather the spirits the Dan believed inhabit the surrounding forest. As with all their masks, this mask is considered sacred and considered a guiding spirit of the tribe. Apart from the cowries which are indicative of wealth, other indicators of the Dan mask style include the concave face, protruding eyes and mouth, the bulging and domed forehead and the rich patina. Dan masks are noted for their vivid expressions which cover a wide range of emotions. This mask has one of the gentle expressions. While the old Dan culture had specific uses for each mask, the present culture has subsumed most of those specificities for general purpose. Therefore, this mask would have been used in celebratory dances of important visitors to the tribe and during village ceremonies.
