Consulter la cote et le prix de Clarke, Edward Daniel. The Tomb Of Alexander: A, 1805

Description : Clarke, Edward Daniel. The Tomb of Alexander: A Dissertation on the Sarcophagus Brought From Alexandria and Now in the British Museum. [viii], [5]-160 pp. 4 engraved plates, one tinted aquatint. (4to) 10½x8¼, period marbled boards with modern tan morocco rebacking and recornering, a portion of the original spine laid down. Lacking errata leaf. First Edition. Cambridge: Printed by R. Watts for J. Mawman, 1805 Edward Daniel Clarke, a Fellow of Jesus College at Cambridge University, together with a friend, visited Egypt in 1801, during a war between Napoleonic forces and the British was going on. When news reached Cairo on the 31st August about a treaty being negotiated in Alexandria, Clarke hurried to inform the British commander in Egypt, General Hutchinson, about the information Carlo Rosetti, the imperial consul, had told him about Egyptian antiquities to be shipped from Alexandria to France, including the famous Rosetta Stone. Included as well was a green sarcophagus which for many centuries had been regarded as the tomb of Alexander the Great, the founder of Alexandria. Once Champollion had deciphered the Rosetta Stone it became clear that the hieroglyphs carved on the sarcophagus proclaimed it to have belonged to Pharaoh Nectanebo II and it had likely been used as a tomb for several others afterwards. To this day the issue where the body of Alexander the Great is buried remains unresolved. Original spine chipped, board edges a bit rubbed, some light worming in lower margin of several pages, light foxing to text pages, heavier foxing to plates, several signatures a bit shorter and with dark age toning, overall very good.
