Consulter la cote et le prix de Buffalo Mask Bamileke, 1999

Description : Buffalo Mask Bamileke Grasslands Cameroon H: 70 cm (approx. 2’ 4”) Estimated age: end of the 19th century Compare: Sotheby’s, African and Oceanic Art, November 19, 1999, NY, Lot 273 Provenance: French private collection The buffalo mask, the most common type of mask, represents power, courage, and virility. The hunters were obliged to hand over the heads of all the buffalos they killed to the ruler. If they failed to do so they could face the death penalty (Bamun tribe). The skull of the buffalo was usually hung over an entrance or, like the skulls of killed enemies, on a post that supported the roof. Skulls of animals were also used as seats. The horns were used as drinking vessels and decorated with carvings. This exceptional mask was made from one single piece of wood and then covered with raffia tissue and glass beads using a special technique carried out by the artists of the Grasslands. Commercially available blue, tube-like beads prevail. Wood, beads, raffia.
