Consulter la cote et le prix de Anthropomorphic African Kuba Palm Wine Cup

Description : Africa, West bank of Kasai River, Kuba, Dengese sub-group, early 20th century. Anthropomorphic wooden cups used for drinking palm wine have traditionally been created throughout the Kuba kingdom. This example is of high quality and rare for its depiction of a face with European features as well as scarification marks at the temples, a fusion of both European and African characteristics. The piece was created when colonialism had begun and the Europeans evidently made their presence known. This particular cup also shows two abstract visages with more African features adorning the handle. Finely carved, beautiful form with impressive silhouette and rich patina. Size: 6-1/2 tall. Provenance: Ex-private Pickard Collection, Mr. Pickard began collecting African art in 1959 following university study in Africa. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #101575
