Description : This fine, round, dark gray vessel depicts a complete figure which is rare.The Mangbetu ethnic group lives deep in the center of Africa. They were famous for their hair styles and practiced Lipombo, the art of head elongation that denoted majesty and status. The people of this tribe produced a large variety of highly developed art.The smaller pots were used for more specific tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and pouring. Mangbetu pots are handmade out of clay and fired in its natural form in open fire. All our lots are appraised and checked by Jos Humblet. Mr. Humblet (°1954, Brussels) graduated in 1978 as Master of Art at St. Lukas in Brussels. From 1978 until 1993 he worked at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he specialised in formal analysis of works of art.
