The banded alabaster vessel inscribed for a "royal acquaintance" named Horwedja, meaning "Horus is sound" or "healthy", the son of Hathor-emhat, meaning "Hathor is Foremost", with traditional prayers invoking both the goddess Neith and the god Duamutef, the latter depicted here with a jackal head as a lid for the vessel, both regarded as protectors of the stomach 111/4 in. (28.6 cm) high PROVENANCE Antiquities and Islamic Art, Sotheby's New York, 14 December 1993, lot 362.
