Description : Egypt, Late Period, ca. 1000-500 BCE. A set of 2 faience pendants of Ancient Egypt. The first, a statuette of Tawaret, the demon-wife of Apep. Tawaret was most often portrayed as a hippopotamus, famously aggressive defender of its young. Pregnant Egyptian women wore pendants like these to protect their unborn children. The second pendant, a statuette of the god Bes, also a protector of children and pregnancies. Both deities were called upon for help during childbirth. Both pendants measure 1-1/4H. Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago. All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
