Description : A Roman double-spouted ceramic lamp, c. AD 50 - 100, within the discus a frieze of gladiatorial equipment: two greaves, two crested helmets with cheek pieces, two rectangular shields and two swords, one straight and one curved. The lamp with two voluted nozzles with rounded tips, the narrow shoulder separated from rim by inward sloping molded rim, pierced handle at back. On bottom a slightly raised disk base. L: 5 1/4 (13.3 cm). Well-preserved brown slip and nice detail. Some restoration to tip of one spout and handle restored without ornament. Cf. Bailey, Vol. III, no. Q1012 for the type. Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City. Mr. Klein sought out and acquired these souvenirs as part of his vast collecting interests. Said to have collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur, his overall collection showcased his diverse array of artifacts acquired over a period of 45 years and included the art of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome.
