Description : 8TH CENTURY B.C. The rectangular container with central partition, the lid pivots on an encased vertical pin at one end, opposite emerges the head and forepaws of a lion, the body of the lion extends onto the base of the container in relief, damaged hole at one side 51/2 in. (14 cm.) long NOTES For a circular bronze container with pivotal lid, cf. O. White Muscarella, Bronze and Iron, Ancient Near Eastern Artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1988, p. 381, no. 500. The emerging forepart of a lion is frequently found on stone libation bowls during this period. In Egypt such cartouche-shaped containers were used for storing incense pellets and were part of the temple furniture used in purification ritual; cf. C. Insley Green, The Temple Furniture from the Sacred Animal Necropolis at North Saqqara, 1964-1976, London, 1987, p. 44, pl. 66, no. 93 for similar shaped container.
