Description : A Large Etruscan Bucchero Fusiform Alabastron, 7th Century B. C., raised on a modern stand, the tapered body of the alabastron ornamented with banding encircling the base, belly, and shoulder of the vessel, rising to an everted rim, the alabastron faded to grey overall, raised on a modern acrylic and metal stand (chip to rim), The alabastron 24.5 cm high, 4 cm diameter, with stand 26.5 cm high. 5 cm wide, 5 cm deep. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 13 July 1981, lot 249. The perfume phials known as aabastra originated in Egypt with Greece becoming the largest producer of the items in the ancient Mediterranean . Many Attic examples were glazed white in emulation of the prized alabaster vessels, a concept echoed in this example with Etruria also producing alabastron items (see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 2008.332). Bucchero ware, produced in an oxygen-starved firing process that turned the clay black, was predominant in Etruscan pottery. Although predominately produced in black, bucchero ware could be produced in paler shades and often faded to these over time. For comparable alabastra, cf.
