Description : A beautifully detailed Roman ceramic lamp, Late 1st - early 2nd Century AD, within the discus is a winged Erote standing to right, looking left, holding a lyre and an object resembling a miniature male bust, at his feet, a cippus. The discus is set off from the ovolo pattern on the shoulder by a series of grooves, the nozzle is short and rounded, the ring handle with incised lines and the flat circular base set of by double rings, CY_I_E_O/N/YOC within. In fine style with well-preserved deep brown slip. A quality lamp from a first rate lamp manufacturer in mostly likely Asia Minor. L: 4 3/8 in (11.4 cm). Old repair on bottom. light deposits and signs of prior use in antiquity. Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City. Mr. Klein sought out and acquired these souvenirs as part of his vast collecting interests. Said to have collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur, his overall collection showcased his diverse array of artifacts acquired over a period of 45 years and included the art of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome.
