Description : **First Time At Auction** West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask known as a gle or ge used during ceremonial dances by the Dan peoples. The teardrop-form vizard features a pair of large, circular eyes beneath raised brows, a protruding nose with gently flared nostrils, and pursed lips parted in the middle, all beneath a towering forehead that bulges outwards along the top. The periphery is lined with several perforations for attaching to the wearer's head or a larger costume, and remains of white and dark red pigment are visible across the face. Size: 5.6 W x 9.625 H (14.2 cm x 24.4 cm) Provenance: ex-Sally Snell collection, bequeathed by her uncle Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Condition report : Abrasions and minor nicks, with fading and wear to remaining pigment, darkening to some surfaces, and a couple of stable hairline fissures, otherwise intact and very good. Remains of pigment in scattered areas and nice patina throughout. Metal wire strung through 2 perforations along verso for mounting and display purposes.
