Description : **First Time At Auction** West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask featuring a pair of highly stylized anthropomorphic faces representing village female elders. The mask body itself is a relatively hemispherical wooden backing from which emanate the dark brown faces, and perforations along the periphery enable the owner to wear the mask either on their face or as part of a larger costume. Each face has large eyes beneath sweeping brows, a tall, slender nose with flared nostrils, and peaked coiffures atop high foreheads.
