Description : West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A petite passport maskette with stylized anthropomorphic features, hand-carved from lightweight wood, created to serve as an amulet by the Dan peoples and neighboring cultures to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection. This example has an elongated pointed head with a ridged coiffure, a protruding nose, deep set eyes with faint incised eyelids, and pursed lips. The surface is highly polished and has developed lustrous and smooth patina. Size: 4.125 L x 2.3 W (10.5 cm x 5.8 cm), 5.75 H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
