Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, or Central African Republic, Lobala, Zande, or Banda people, ca. 19th century CE. This is a superb and sizable zoomorphic slit drum, hand-carved from a single piece of wood into a goat form. The portly animal stands on four thick delineated legs, the cylindrical back is slit, and the interior body is hollowed out as a sound box. At one end is a thick and slightly curved tail enveloped in a lighter patina from holding and gripping the surface, the other end has a projecting head, the horns also serving as handles. The head is thrust forward and incised with crosshatching and large almond shaped eyes with raised pupils, the lips are slightly parted revealing teeth. The rest of the body is etched with linear markings and has a wonderful aged and weathered surface from age and use- note the lighter surface around the chamber slit where the player must have struck countless times with a beater stick! Size: 29 L x 8 W x 10 H (73.7 cm x 20.3 cm x 25.4 cm), 12 H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand. The walls below the slit are purposefully unequal in thickness so that different pitches are produced when played, which is noticeable when lightly tapping this drum! These instruments are found throughout the Congo and have several names but are often known as mondo or kyondo. Slit drums are used for signaling and communication as well as for musical entertainment, spiritual healing, and ceremony- the zoomorphic forms imbuing strength and power into the sounds.
