Notas : "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way" is the famous opening line of Anna Karenina. In this intriguing diptych with seven original watercolours Dumas turns it all around. She uses six lucky charms to seduce providence and one bad charm to ward off misfortune. But even though each of the six nudes is wearing a talisman, Marlene Dumas puts the importance of luck into perspective, her writing in the artwork reads: "Women always say - I don’t deserve it I’m only lucky - she said" with a postscript "Providence is female! he said". We see six women with superstition attributes against a masked one staring at the dice in front of her. Is happiness a coincidence? Can you attract good luck with a couple of tricks or do you have to earn it? As always, she lets the audience answer.
