Descripción : Provenance: Sandra Kerno Collection , Additional Information: A delightful work signed by Edward Chiwawa (1935-), a First Generation Nyanga sculptor. Edward Chiwawa is one of the internationally renowned First Generation of Zimbabwean stone sculptors. Born in 1935, Chiwawa started carving in Guruve in 1970. In 1979, he and a group of other artists escaped the insecurity in Guruve and Tengenenge during the war of liberation and joined Tom Blomefield, a farmer turned sculptor, at his Tengenenge Sculpture Community. After the war Chiwawa would never return to Guruve. He lives in Chitungwiza, south of Harare, where he continues to carve and participate in exhibitions both locally and internationally. Since the 1980s, he has exhibited in London (1981), Frankfurt (1985), Sydney (1986), Melbourne (1987), Rome (1987), and Paris (1987), as well as in Switzerland and the USA. In 1986, he won First Prize at the 7th International Small Sculpture Exhibition in Budapest. Many of Chiwawa's works are now in the permanent collections in the National Gallery and the Chapungu Park in Harare, in the collection of Manfred Kugnigk, Bad Soden, Germany, in Afrika Museum, Berg en Dal, the Netherlands, in the Joseph G. Baerber collection, and in Switzerland.  ,“Man in the ,N'Jeelja Bush” is a marvelous example of the work of Edward Chiwawa. Made from serpentine, it incorporates both smooth and rough surfaces and displays the geometric lines, abstract forms and round faces characteristic of the artist. The round face is in fact the “humanization” of universal subjects such as the sun or moon and is typically rendered in the form of a beautiful female face. , Edward Chiwawa draws his inspiration from the natural world and from the beauty of the female face and form. , Recommended Reading: Joosten, Ben SCULPTORS FROM ZIMBABWE, THE FIRST GENERATION, Galerie de Strang, Lexicon, 2001, Celia Winter-Irving, STONE SCULPTURE IN ZIMBABWE.
