Descripción : Bronze Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 30th Dynasty Statuette of seated Osiris in mummy form Detailed handling of the face Dimensions: 13.6 x 3.4 x 1.5 cm(height x width x depth) Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below) A similar piece is held by the Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim (1233) The seated bronze statuette depicts the god of the dead, Osiris, in mummy form. The statuette comes from ancient Egypt and dates to the Late Period of ancient Egypt, the 26 υ th to the 30 υ th Dynasty (664-342 BCE). It is a hollow cast statue. The god is wearing his characteristic Atef crown with straight feathers and a sun plate on top. The crown ends in a Uraeus, the stylised form of the Egyptian cobra. The characteristic beard of the god is attached to his chin. The face is cast in detailed manner, the mouth small with full lips. The eyes are deeply sunk, and they were formerly equipped with inlays of a different material, possibly silver or copper inlays that could be exchanged. The arms are crossed in front of the breast. Further symbols of the identity of the god Osiris are scourge and crosier in his hands. Crosier and scourge are the characteristic insignia of the king, the insignia of authority per se. Many pharaohs had their coffins decorated with these symbols of power. The crosier is similar to a sceptre. The scourge was built of a rod, which had hanging stripes or pearl stringson the upper end, symbolising a herder's whip. The gods Min and Osiris are usually depicted with these insignia. The condition of the statuette is very good, regarding its great age. The surface is covered with a thick, dark brown patina. A malachite coloured patina is beginning to build at some parts, providing the statuette with special charm. The face, details of the crown and single fingers are minimally timeworn. The Osiris statuette is installed on a little modern Plexiglas plinth. The dimensions of the statuette mount up to 13.6 x 3.4 x 1.5 cm (height x width x depth).
